PURPOSE 

 

Responsible for managing all aspects of the Fleet Maintenance Department, including upkeep of all assets, monitoring maintenance budgets and resources, and supervising multiple mechanics. Gathers bids to outsource necessary work. Prioritizes repair/improvement issues and opportunities with approval from the Operations Manager.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Executes Builders FirstSource’s fleet maintenance programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintains parts inventory, monitors purchase orders and invoice approvals, and manages the department’s budget.
  • Coaches and trains employees on repairing and maintaining company assets.
  • Inspects completed work for conformance to specifications and standards.
  • Drives compliance with all DOT safety policies and procedures.
  • Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety regulations.
  • Communicates the status of repairs with internal departments and leaders.
  • Manages the dispatch of emergency roadside repairs.
  • Facilitates the transfer of fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Requisitions work from outside services or vendors for projects that require specific expertise or capabilities.
  • Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet schedules.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.
  • Performs activities of workers supervised.
  • Operates equipment ranging from light and heavy-duty trucks to forklifts and telehandlers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Supervises employees in the maintenance department. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable state and federal laws. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must satisfactorily perform each essential duty. The requirements listed below represent the required knowledge, skill, and ability.

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED), five to seven years related experience and training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of DOT/FMCSA processes.

PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED

  • CDL license
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish at an intermediate level.

COMPETENCIES

  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Planning/Organizing: Prioritizes and plans work activities; uses time efficiently; plans for additional resources; sets goals and objectives; organizes or schedules other people and their tasks; develops realistic action plans.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. The ability to interpret multiple instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Computer Skills: Proficient PC skills (Word, Excel, and Email).
  • Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations: Must complete BFS safety training.
  • Other Qualifications: Experience with hydraulic and electrical repairs is helpful but not required.
